Our Partner Tony Bowden is leading and supporting the development of Helicon Health as its CEO
Helicon Health has spun out of UCL and the NHS following a considerable amount of research within UCL Centre for Health Informatics & Multiprofessional Education (CHIME) CHIME is within the UCL Institute of Health Informatics (IHI) – an academic department of UCL within the Faculty of Population Health Sciences and the School of Life & Medical Sciences. CHIME spawned a number of world leading initiatives including the ISO Standard for Electronic Health Records ISO EN13606 and OpenEHR upon which the HeliconHeart record server is based.
The Helicon Health value proposition is based on clinically led development and deployment of innovative technologies to support the health and care systems to achieve better outcomes for the population at lower cost – through a combination of patient engagement and socio technical innovation. To exemplify Helicon Health’s work:
Stroke, Heart Failure and related cardio vascular diseases are according to NHS England the largest avoidable causes of premature death. It is widely acknowledged that with the right strategies the number of strokes and hence premature deaths can be significantly reduced. Atrial fibrillation is a major risk factor for stroke. That is why our initial package of services (HeliconHeart) supports the management of patients with atrial fibrillation through the establishment of tools to treat the main components of this increasingly common condition. These comprise advisory and management systems which address the treatment of the heart rate and heart rhythm and the co-existing morbidities such as hypertension and heart failure as well as the dedicated anticoagulant advisory system.
HeliconHeart is an integrated package of web-based services, designed to be interoperable with a wide range of hospital and GP systems. It is tailored to assist the management of patients with atrial fibrillation who, typically, need both anticoagulation to reduce the risk of stroke and other measures to control the heart rate and rhythm.
Helicon’s unique package of services includes:
Smart phone based Health screening to identify undiagnosed AF and other arrhythmias
Population health analytics to identify those at risk of stroke but are missing from the AF Registers and those that are Likely to be in need of treatment
Real-time web based electronic health record (EHR) shared with clinical colleagues and patient, hosted on NHS spine via N3
Algorithmic anticoagulant advisory systems CE Marked
Interoperability with existing GP systems and other clinical systems
Affordable patient self-monitoring, using Bluetooth BP monitor and Roche Coaguchek
Smartphone / Tablet StrokePrevent apps on iPhone; Android and Amazon stores and online learning for clinician education
Smartphone apps for patient education and activation
More recently Helicon Health has been selected by the Digital Health.London Accelerator Programme. The competition for this was fierce with 32 companies selected out of 119 who applied.
